Edinburg City Council Recognizes Juneteenth CommitteeRSS Feed

EDINBURG, TEXAS (May 16, 2018) – The Edinburg City Council recognized the Juneteenth Committee for expanding its efforts to engage the citizens of Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley in the observance of Juneteenth.



On June 19, 1865 Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, bringing about the freeing of 250,000 African American slaves in the state.



On January 1, 1980, Texas became the first state to grant official recognition to Juneteenth as the first emancipation celebration.



In Edinburg, Juneteenth promotes and cultivates knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.



This year, the City will host its first ever Juneteenth Community Festival at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard on June 16 from 5-10 p.m.



Additionally, the 25 th Anniversary Memorial Observance will be held at Restlawn Cemetery in Edinburg from 9-11 a.m. followed by a reception at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
